Wendi Stephenson Canty

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
CrossFit Kids Trainer

Wendi knew early on that she wanted to educate, train and make a difference in people’s lives. She has a passion for challenging and motivating athletes, pushing them beyond their comfort zone. She has been involved in the fitness industry for over 20 years. Since early 1990’s, Wendi has held a fitness instructor’s certification from Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) as well as multiple other fitness certifications.

“I was tired of the everyday gym routines/classes, and I knew I was missing something personally and with my training program. CrossFit presents so many different challenges; it leaves me vulnerable, and exposes my weaknesses. It has forced me push my mind and body to a different level, one that I had never experienced within my fitness career. I knew from the first WOD, CrossFit was for me”.

Wendi and her husband, Scott, live in Rock Hill, South Carolina. They have three children. She is a graduate of Clemson University. She is a founding member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, enjoying the beach, and Clemson Athletic events.

Scott Canty

Level 1 CrossFit Trainer

Scott was first introduced to the weight room in high school when he played baseball. He had always trained in a traditional gym until he was introduced to CrossFit early 2012. He immediately became hooked on CrossFit.

“For many years, I always trained in the ways of a traditional gym, emphasizing chest, back, bis & tris, often times neglecting my cardio and endurance. My cardio and endurance usually consisted of periodic runs and playing softball in the spring and summer. It wasn’t until my wife told me bench pressing would not save me from a heart attack. This statement made me realize that my cardio was as important as strength and more important than overall size.” CrossFit has helped me gain power, strength, mental toughness and endurance that I was never able to achieve in a traditional gym. There is nothing like the WODs or the environment CrossFit provides”

Scott and his wife, Wendi, live in Rock Hill, South Carolina. They have three children. He is a graduate of York Technical College in Rock Hill. He is a member and Deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family, playing softball, riding motorcycles, bowling and spending time at the beach.

Lynn Joiner Rutland

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
CrossFit Kids Trainer

Lynn, the youngest of three children, grew up in a family that always modeled good health and fitness lifestyles. As a little girl, she would go with her mother to aerobics classes and instead of staying in the childcare room, she would participate in the classes. She has run a variety of road races including one marathon. She has participated in a wide range of classes at the local YMCA, worked with personal trainers and did some weight training on her own.

In April 2012, after months of her husband telling her how wonderful CrossFit was, she decided to give it a try. She loved every single thing about it! She loved knowing that every workout could be scaled to fit her current fitness level. She loved that every workout was completely different and covered so many domains. CrossFit is her passion and her goal is to lead others in the direction of good health and fitness. She looks forward to helping everyone reach their goals at CrossFit 1889!

Lynn is married to her college sweetheart, Rett. They have two handsome boys. Lynn graduated from Clemson University in 1995 with BA in Elementary Education and is a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church. Lynn loves spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, all things Clemson and of course, CrossFit!

Rett grew up in a very competitive family and cannot remember a time when sports, exercise and education were not a part of his life. Throughout his life he has always been involved in sports which include participation as an athlete and a coach in football, soccer, basketball and golf.  Rett enjoys coaching and has a varied background in coaching athletes at all levels.  Rett has worked with athletes of all ages, from preschool children to adults.  In the fall of 2011, Rett found CrossFit after struggling to find the right exercise regimen.  Rett ran 3-4 times a week, but could not reach certain goals to live a better, healthier life.  After finding CrossFit and adopting many of the lifestyle changes they encourage, he was finally able to see amazing results and reach goals he had set for himself.  He now maintains that healthy lifestyle and continues to enjoy achieving new goals through CrossFit.

Rett is married to his beautiful wife, Lynn.  They have two boys who also love CrossFit.  Rett graduated from Clemson University in 1996 with a BS in Mathematics Teaching.  He is a State Farm Insurance Agent and a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church.  Rett enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing golf,  Clemson athletics and CrossFit.

Jeff has always been interested in athletics from a very young age.  When he realized that he was not as naturally gifted as some teammates, he knew that he needed to get stronger and faster.  At the age of 14 he began working out and has been hooked ever since.  For 15 years Jeff went to a traditional gym until he found CrossFit, which he started in 2011 and started coaching shortly thereafter.

“When I first went into a CrossFit gym, I thought that I was in shape.  Two minutes into the workout, I quickly learned that was not the case and was hooked.  One thing that I love about CrossFit is that no matter what your fitness level or ability may be, each workout can be scaled so that everyone is truly tested.  I foresee myself sticking with CrossFit workouts for life.”
Jeff is originally from the Boston area and now resides with his wife Kristy and daughter Molly in Fort Mill, South Carolina.  He is a graduate of The University of Richmond (BSBA) and The University of Georgia (MBA).  In his free time Jeff enjoys watching many sports,  as well as spending time with family.

Brian Hamel

Level 1 CrossFit Trainer
CrossFit Judge

Brian has a love of exercise and, until recently, focused strictly on endurance sports including running road races, distance cycling events and triathlons.  CrossFit opened his eyes to the importance of adding strength training into an overall fitness program, something lacking in his former training regimen.  New to the sport of CrossFit, Brian became a Level 1 CrossFit Trainer to improve his understanding of scaling in order to develop proper form in CrossFits foundational movements.  Brian believes that steady progress with heavy emphasis on proper form provide for safe and effective development in all fitness domains.

Brian is a husband to his beautiful wife and father to two wonderful children – all of which are CrossFit athletes and introduced him to the sport.  Brian graduated from Clemson with a BS in Chemical Engineering in ‘95.  He is a perennial early-bird and loves working out to Eminem.

Hope Brazil

Level 1 CrossFit Trainer

Hope never showed an interest in working out until she took a weight lifting and conditioning class in high school. After finishing the course, she found herself working out on an “as-needed” basis (a.k.a the pants were getting tight). In 2010, Hope showed a renewed interest for physical conditioning while taking Wendi Canty’s Bootcamp class at a local fitness facility. When Wendi transitioned to CrossFit, Hope followed soon after and was hooked immediately.

“I loved the fact that when I walked into CrossFit the programming was already done for me including the reps and weights, so all I had to do was scale to my ability. I was never bored by doing the same workouts repeatedly because they changed every day. The workouts engaged my entire body so I was able to workout efficiently and see results quickly. The community atmosphere that CrossFIt produces allowed me to develop friendships that kept me accountable and motivated as an athlete.”

Hope is an educator for the Rock Hill School District. She graduated from Winthrop University with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education in 2009 and received her Master’s Degree from Columbia College in 2010. She is married to Scott Brazil, and they have a yellow lab named Skeeter. As a CrossFit trainer, Hope looks forward to working with all athletes regardless of skill level and will work hard to push athletes beyond their current physical boundaries.

“CrossFit is the sport of life.  It prepares you to face the unknown without specializing in any one thing. It challenges you, pushes you, allows you to compete with others and most importantly with yourself.  There’s no greater feeling than hitting a new PR or watching someone else accomplish things they never thought possible.  CrossFit allows those things to happen daily.”

Jason teaches elementary P.E. in the Fort Mill School district. He lives in Rock Hill with his two handsome sons, Tanner (4) and Brody (2).  He is an active member of First Baptist Church of Rock Hill and enjoys working out, being with family and traveling.  Jason is committed to helping you meet your fitness goals here at CrossFit 1889.

Jennifer CreedJen Creed

Level 1 CrossFit Trainer

Jennifer led an active lifestyle and attended a small high school which allowed her to compete in a variety of sports including cross country, basketball, track and field, cheerleading and softball.  She married her high school sweetheart, Ryan, shortly after they graduated and is a mom to two amazing sons.  Her oldest son, Dillon, attends college and lives in Columbia, SC and her youngest son, Logan, is in the 82nd Airborne stationed in Fort Bragg, NC.  Graduating from the School of Life, Jen works full time as a Corporate Account Manager and spends as much time at CrossFit with Ryan and friends as her schedule allows.

As parents of two extremely active boys, Jen and Ryan devoted their lives to being the boys’ biggest fans and she always found herself in the role of Team mom.  Entering into this new phase, with their children grown, CrossFit has become a huge part of their lives.  Jen has always loved to exercise and found that she most enjoys group fitness.  She taught a CardioFit class at a local church as a way to get friends, family and church members to enjoy a workout with upbeat music and dancing.  Jen realized a passion for helping others while becoming a healthier more confident person inside and out.  She believes that the true beauty of CrossFit is that it is scalable, effective and efficient making it the perfect sport for any committed individual, no matter the age, size or physical limitation.  Her goal at CrossFit 1889 is to assist all athletes, from beginner to advanced by helping them perform all movements safely, effectively and efficiently to improve times, weights and the personal goals of each athlete.  She loves helping people push themselves beyond their comfort zone, as she tries to better herself.

Matt Savage

Matt is a Physical Education teacher in the Fort Mill school district.  He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2011.  He is currently working on a master’s degree from Columbia College.  Throughout college Matt was a runner, he ran a number of 5k and 10k races.  In addition to running matt worked out in a traditional gym, played sports and refereed basketball.  After graduating he realized he want to try something new, this is when he came to CrossFit.

CrossFit was perfect for him because it was ever changing and not repetitive.  CrossFit gave him the competition that he loves but it also made him realize he could push himself harder and get more out of his workouts.  CrossFit has not only allowed him to improve on his Olympic lifts but it has also helped to make him faster in his running.

Matt is a huge Gamecocks fan.  He enjoys spending time with him friends and family.  In his free time he still plays in sports leagues around the Charlotte area four nights a week.

Level 1 CrossFit Trainer

Zach’s fitness journey began at 255 pounds as a senior in high school. He realized something needed to change. He started creating a new lifestyle that focused on diet, body building, and some cardio every now and then. Thankfully, the lifestyle change stuck and he pursued other forms of activity. Four years later he found CrossFit and has not looked back. After two years of training, he decided to take the next step and become a coach, earning his CFL1 in February 2015.

“I enjoy CrossFit because I am able to constantly improve my physical and mental health. No matter what the workout of the day is, I always leave better in some way than I was before. Be it strength, stamina, or humility, an athlete will leave the box superior to their previous selves. Having the opportunity to coach is amazing. I love helping athletes push themselves harder as they learn their bodies and true capabilities. Better still, is the feeling of accomplishment shared throughout the group after a tough workout. If you want to be a part of something, go for a CrossFit community. If you try, you can meet wonderful people and develop some really great friendships”.

Zach is currently earning an Athletic Training degree at Winthrop University. Upon graduation, he plans to sit for the certification exam to become a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).
